Summary

We'll hike off some of those holiday calories in Madison’s Peeler Park. We'll walk down the Greenway and hike up the Silo trail past the old farmstead to a peak which provides great panoramic views of various parts of the city. We’ll then head back down on the Long View trail, over another hill, and return on the paved greenway past the Boardwalk to the trailhead. We’ll hike between 4 and 5 miles and be done in time to head over to Calypso Cafe in East Nasty for a healthy lunch. Peeler Park, which has been described as “a jewel hidden in the middle of the city,” is nestled in a bend of the Cumberland River all the way out to the end of Neely’s Bend Road in Madison and is part of the Metro Nashville Davidson County Greenway system.

Details

We'll meetup in Madison at 8:15 AM for an 8:30 sharp departure. If you are able, please plan to give your driver a buck or two for gas. Bring plenty of water and a snack (maybe an energy bar or piece of fruit) for the trail. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes or boots suitable for hiking on muddy / wet trails and pack rain gear, sunglasses, and maybe a hat. Don’t forget your camera and binoculars. It never hurts to have a change of clothes and another pair of shoes for lunch and the ride home. If you wish to meet us at the trailhead, please follow the directions below as GPS may take you to another part of the park. We expect to arrive back at the Madison meetup by early- to mid-afternoon.

***Participants are responsible for their own safety.***

OUTsiders are committed to taking care of each other. By participating, you agree to adhere to the guidelines and procedures we establish. In the interest of safety, you’re expected to be clear-headed and unimpaired during our activities. We respect applicable regulations and laws as well as our hosts’ wishes and rules for private lands and communities we visit. All participants must sign a waiver of liability.

Let us know if you plan to participate. We need to talk to you briefly and exchange contact information before you join us for the first time. Please coordinate driving plans with us (such as whether you will join us at the meetup, en route, or at the destination). If you need a ride we’ll try to help. We strive to be flexible so that folks can participate in day or weekend OUTings in whatever way works for them. Get in touch with us if you want to join later or just for a day so we can plan accordingly.

We generally require newcomers to join us for a couple of day hikes before participating in their first event on private land or multi-day OUTing. Slots for those who’ll be joining their first multi-day event may be limited in number. With rare designated exceptions participants are expected to limit alcohol consumption on multi-day OUTings to a moderate amount around dinner time.

If you have questions about how we operate, just ask! We’re always interested in participants’ ideas and feedback.

=========================

Middle Tennessee OUTsiders is an all-inclusive group inviting gay, lesbian, bi, trans, queer, and straight folks to enjoy hiking and other outdoor activities together.

Our priority is to provide opportunities to explore and experience nature and the great outdoors via affordable activities with a down-to-earth, laid-back sensibility. We also promote and participate in these kinds of opportunities when they are organized by others.

We strive to create fun, safe, non-competitive, nature-focused recreational outings that promote healthy living and appeal to participants who are diverse in terms of age, experience, and ability.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

Contact us for the meetup location or let us know if you'll be meeting us at the trailhead: From the south: take Briley Parkway north to exit 14 Gallatin Pk North/Madison, go north on Gallatin Pike past the graveyards and continue approximately 1.5 miles. Keep right. Turn right onto Neely’s Bend Rd at Walgreens / City Road Chapel Methodist. There is only one way to turn onto Neely’s Bend. Follow for 7+ miles or until you are sure you will never get there. :)  The last restroom is at the Mapco. Go past the red barn and horses--you're almost there! The trailhead and boat ramp parking lot are at the end of the road at the Cumberland River.
