Summary
The Middle Tennessee OUTsiders are facilitating a chill float on the Caney Fork River. Our course is about 7 river miles and will take 4-5 hours depending on our pace and how often we stop. It’ll be a leisurely trip – we’ll take time to enjoy the scenery, stop for lunch, and depending on the weather get into the river where it looks inviting (in general, the Caney is very cold.) The outfitter’s fee which includes paddles, PFD (life vest,) and shuttle service is $30 cash for an individual kayak or $45 cash for a 2-man kayak. If you bring your own kayak and gear, the shuttle fee is $15 per boat. They’ll pick us up at the take-out point at Stone Bridge and take us to the put-in at the bridge at Betty’s Island.
*** Our river outfitter doesn't have a storefront location, so they will meet us at the location where we'll end our float with kayaks and accessories. That means we need an accurate count of who's paddling and whether or not they're bringing their own kayak. You must RSVP. ***
Bring a towel and a complete change of clothing and shoes for the ride home. You’ll also want to bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and probably sunglasses and a hat…and LOTS of water to drink. Expect that you and your belongings will get wet. Most everything you take on the river will need to be in waterproof containers or double zip-bagged. The outfitter rents dry boxes for $5. Wear appropriate and comfortable clothing (a bathing suit or tech shorts is probably best—NO cotton) and water shoes or sandals (old tennis shoes will do, but no flip flops!) To minimize getting river grit in your shoes or sandals, consider wearing wool or neoprene socks. You’ll need to pack a lunch and/or snacks (sandwiches, power bars, trail mix, fruit, nuts, maybe something to share) and water (did we mention to bring enough water? ?)
Some of us may opt to grab a bite to eat at a local place before we head or once we return to the meetup.
***Participants are responsible for their own safety.***
OUTsiders are committed to taking care of each other. By participating, you agree to adhere to the safety guidelines and procedures we establish. In the interest of safety, you’re expected to be clear-headed and unimpaired during our activities. We respect applicable regulations and laws as well as our hosts’ wishes and rules for private lands and communities we visit. All participants must sign a waiver of liability.
Let us know if you plan to participate. We need to talk to you briefly and exchange contact information before you join us for the first time. Please inform us of your driving plans with us (such as whether you will join us at the meetup, en route, or at the destination). The core group will leave from a location in SE Nashville. If you need a ride we’ll try to help. We strive to be flexible so that folks can participate in day or weekend OUTings in whatever way works for them. Get in touch with us if you want to join later or just for a day so we can plan accordingly.
We plan to paddle unless flooding, heavy storms, or sustained rain occur or are expected. We’ll post updates on Facebook, via the email list, and try to text via cell phone.
We generally require newcomers to join us for a couple of day hikes before participating in their first event on private land or multi-day OUTing. Slots for those who’ll be joining their first multi-day event may be limited in number.
If you have questions about how we operate, just ask!
We’re always interested in participants’ ideas and feedback.

Middle Tennessee OUTsiders is an all-inclusive group inviting gay, lesbian, bi, trans, queer, and straight folks to enjoy hiking, camping, wading, swimming, rafting, and other outdoor activities together.
Our priority is to provide opportunities to explore and experience nature and the great outdoors via affordable activities with a down-to-earth, laid-back sensibility. We also promote and participate in these kinds of opportunities when they are organized by others.
We strive to create fun, safe, non-competitive, nature-focused recreational outings that promote healthy living and appeal to participants who are diverse in terms of age, experience, and ability.
