Join us for a high summer 4-day, 3 nights and 30-mile backpack on the Cape Chignecto Coastal Trail, Nova Scotia, Canada.  This loop hike, in Cape Chignecto Provincial Park, will traverse 20 miles of rugged coastline with towering sea cliffs along the Bay of Fundy.  The route will pass through deep valleys, sheltered coves and remote beaches.

The variable landforms on the Cape Chignecto peninsula combined with a coastal marine climate produces an extraordinary ecosystem with remnants of old growth forest of towering stands of red spruce, uncommon plants and abundant wildlife.

Park information can be found at the following links:

We will camp in official backcountry sites located two to four hours apart along the coastal trail.

This is a strenuous hike with many ups and downs over rugged terrain.  However, four full days should allow time for flexible days of exploring coves and beaches, swimming and ample evening social time.

Gear and provisions will be required for 4 full days.  Sharing gear and packing on the ultralight side is recommended.  A suggested gear list is available upon request after signup.

Participants must be physically fit, have prior backpacking experience and must be prepared with appropriate layered clothing  (no cotton) and gear for typical and expected Canada maritime summer conditions.  The trip leader reserves the right to qualify participants.

Fewer than three confirmed participants may cancel this trip at the discretion of the trip leader.

US Citizens will require passports for entry into Canada.

Costs: Shared carpool expenses, park fees, shared budget motels (possibly 2-3 nights), meals, etc.

Tentative Logistics: The backpack will depart from the Red Rock Visitor’s Center, West Advocate, NS at 10 AM.

My plan is to stay in Portland vicinity, Friday evening, July 26.  I encourage US participants to meet in Portland Saturday morning, July 27, to consolidate cars for the eight-hour drive to Canada.   Saturday night will be in a budget motel near the park.  We can coordinate shared accommodations if there is interest.

This preliminary itinerary is flexible and will be finalized within a few months of departure depending on sign-ups and reservations at the park. Park reservations open April 2.   I will update trip details periodically.

Please feel free to contact me for questions or comments.
