Be Prepared: Please be prepared to be self-sufficient. Have your own provisions such as first aid kit, food, water, extra clothing for unplanned weather, etc. Have your EMERGENCY CONTACT SHEET completed and in your backpack; it may save your life, and help reach someone who greatly cares!
Pace: There may be activities when the group is either slower or faster than your current ability. Please know that because this is a group activity, it's hard to accommodate everyone's pace perfectly. Our desire is not to leave anyone, however there have been times when it is in the best interest of all to split up. Please do your part by knowing your own abilities, communicating with the organizer head of time if you would like to start early and have us catch up or fine with finishing on your own.

Enjoy the last remnants of peak foliage season on this traverse that is unmatched for the variety of its views!

Rising roughly 1,000 feet in elevation, the Mt. Holyoke Range runs east to west offering fine views of the Connecticut River and the Pioneer Valley. It is a ridge walk among the Seven Sisters across the Holyoke Range in Western Massachusetts. Elevation, a good workout, vistas, summits, historical hotels and an overall great hike! The New England Scenic Trail passes over the range. The ridge walk offers magnificent views!

We will do a nice 6.5 mile hike which offers 2250 feet of climbing which will take about 5-6 hours. Don’t let the relatively low elevation of the Mt. Holyoke range fool you. This is a moderate-strenuous hike with many short steep climbs and descents. Please be prepared with appropriate clothing (NO COTTON), boots, food and water.

Our day begins with a steep ascent to the summit of Bare Mountain. We’ll follow the Monadnock-Metacomet Trail [New England Scenic Trail] along a ridge line crossing the “Seven Sisters”, a series of small peaks. After approximately 5 miles, we arrive at the summit of Mt. Holyoke where we’ll enjoy spectacular views from the historic summit house. We’ll retrace our steps a short distance to Taylor’s Notch then descend the Taylor’s Notch trail to complete our hike.

Driving directions to the location and spot to meet at:

We'll spot cars and meet at the Taylor's Notch Trailhead on Hockanum Road (Rte. 47) in Amherst, Mass. We'll carpool a short distance to the Notch Visitor’s Center on Rte. 116 in Amherst, Mass. It appears there is a parking fee of $5.00.
