Summary

Join me for a relaxing camping weekend over Labor Day on Sebago Lake.  This will hopefully be an opportunity to meet some new GayOutdoor members!  We'll use the Sebago Lake State Park Campground as our base.  This campground sits on the northwestern shore of the lake, where the Crooked River enters.  It was one of Maine's original five state parks and sits on the deepest and second largest of Maine's lakes.  The campground includes basic amenities, including two beaches and hot showers.

This weekend is meant to be social and fun with no specific itinerary.  That said, the following is an outline of the proposed activites:

  • Saturday:  Pleasant Mountain Hike (5.2 miles and approximately 1850 feet in cumulative elevation gain) - This modest mountain rises up from the western shore of Moose Pond in Denmark, ME.  It offers open summit/ledge views, a fire tower and a waterfall.  Afterwards, there will be time to relax, swim, site-see, etc.
  • Sunday:  Canoe/kayak the picturesque Crooked River and Sebago Lake with a good bit of undeveloped shoreline (around the park), coves, and islands...depending on what the group would like to do (rentals available from local companies for delivery to the campground for $28/half-day).
  • Monday:  Break camp.
  • Nightly campfires

All planned activities will have ability levels of MODERATE.  Any water activities would require decent swimming ability.  There will be plenty of opportunities to relax or to take one of many short trails along the lake.

Camping:  We'll camp at Sebago Lake State Park Campground for the 3 nights.  Reservations can be made online at http://www.campwithme.com. (I've already booked Site 101 and there are nearby sites available...at the time of posting 99M, 100M, 103M were all still available...along with many others in the campground).  Nightly rates are $25/night for residents and $35/night for non-residents plus the reservation fee.  Information about Sebago Lake State Park along with a Campground Map.   NOTE:  You will be responsible for your own site reservation, but I encourage and will help coordinate sharing of sites (Contact the trip leader or other participants to share a site).  A maximum of 6 adults (and I'm assuming 2 tents/cars, like at other campgrounds) are permitted per site.  There are hot showers and lake access from within the park.

Food:  There are a number of large grocery stores in North Windham, but you should bring most of what you will need.

What to Bring:  Some of the camping supplies to consider would include cooler with food, camp stove, clothing, toiletries, tent, sleeping bag, pad/mattress, camp chair, swim suit, towel(s), aqua socks/shoes, hiking boots/shoes, daypack, etc.  All firewood must be sourced locally.  I will be bringing a canopy for the picnic table.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

ROM ROUTE 95 IN MAINE:  Take Exit 48 and follow the signs for Route 302 West.  Turn onto Route 302 West and follow for 21.1 miles.  Turn left onto State Park Road and follow the signs for the campground.

For GPS Users:  11 Park Access Road, Casco, ME 04015 (43.93127, -70.58022).  To obtain custom directions, copy and paste the GPS coordinates directly into Google Maps.
