SUMMARY:
The Long Path is an extraordinary hiking trail between New York City and the Adirondacks. GO members are warmly welcome to join Sundance hikers for a special intermediate-level hike on Section 16 which starts in Riggsville and ends 10.1 miles later at Bull Run. We plan to car camp on Friday and Saturday evenings to maximize our Saturday hiking time.
On our route, we'll experience the scenic and rugged wilderness of upstate New York. The route begins Saturday morning along
a snowmobile trail to the Vernooy Falls, a series of lovely waterfalls. After the cascade, the Long Path follows and crosses many dirt roads on gentle grades for the first six miles. Hemlock forests, fall foliage, and streams add to the natural beauty as the the trail becomes narrower and more rugged as near the shoulder of Samson Mountain and climbs gently over Bangle Hill. We'll cross a bridge over the Rondout Creek before the final descent to Bull Run, which is steep and long.
We will camp in tents under the stars at the Peekamoose Blue Hole, located in Sundown Wild Forest within the Catskill Forest Preserve. at a pre-reserved car-camp site. Together we'll prepare our meals and share basic tasks.
The Blue Hole is a depression in the streambed rock of the Rondout Creek, a unique natural feature formed by sand and swirling gravel in an ancient whirlpool. The creek is part of the watershed for New York City drinking water.
This weekend trip includes carpooling from NYC, meal planning, and sharing the solitude of a very special section of the Long Path. in Ulster County, New York.
LEADERS: Tim Burke and Glen Leiner
COST: Carpooling expense, camp permit, and shared provisions TBD
