SUMMARY: This will be an exciting several days on the wild, spectacular and untrammeled Downeast Coast of Maine and Campobello Island. Our two full days, Sun. (7/16) and Mon. (7/17), will focus on two of the most scenic hikes on this part of the coast. On Sun. (7/16), we will hike the most spectacular trail along the whole Maine coast, the Bold Coast Trail in the Cutler. This 6.3-mile loop trail has breathtaking ocean views rivaling those of California's Big Sur coast. High cliffs plunging to the sea, crashing surf, a magnificent maritime spruce-fir forest, pocket coves with cobble beaches, whale-watching and peat bogs will all be part of this extraordinary hike. On Mon. (7/17), we'll drive up to Campobello Island in Canada, a short drive across the bridge from Lubec, Maine. We will all need passports for this! On Campobello, we'll hike the 5-mile scenic Racoon Beach-Liberty Point loop trail in Roosevelt Campobello International Park. The trail skirts rockbound cliffs and coves, and we’ll likely spot bald eagles, seals and whales along the way. And there's even a fog forest to explore! That afternoon, if the tide is right, we'll walk out to the East Quoddy Lighthouse, one of the most picturesque on the entire Atlantic seaboard, and only accessible at around low tide. This will definitely be a fun and memorable trip! I can recommend reasonably-priced accommodations for your stay in Machiasport/Machias for the three nights (7/15, 7/16, 7/17). The first night, we'll all meet at 6:00 pm at my house in Machiasport (see directions) for a pizza dinner and schmoozing. The other two nights we'll also get together for dinner, including a cookout. There will be a small donation for our group dinners for two nights. If you have any questions, please be sure to give me a shout!
