SUMMARY:

Join us for a challenging eight mile hike along a scenic section of the Appalachian Trail. We'll start out with a short walk over the great swamp on a boardwalk, follow the AT and climb Corbin Hill through a pleasantly wooded area before meandering in open meadows. Along the trail is the famous 300 year-old Dover Oak which has a remarkable 20-foot circumference. The route includes varied terrain with marshes and stream crossings, farms, fields, and the steep slope of West Mountain (1250 ft). There will be some rocky scrambles, and narrow and wide trails with muddy and rocky conditions. We will be crossing swampy areas on elevated boards. The pastoral landscape and Dutchess County vistas add to the beauty of this section of the AT. We plan to rest for lunch at the Cat Rocks before retracing our steps back to the trailhead.

Hiking experience and good physical condition recommended. There are no facilities en route so please see checklist for needed items. Leaders will determine turnaround time and mileage based on participants' ability. Chester, a trained and leashed Labrador dog, will be hiking with us. Capable new members are especially welcome.
