SUMMARY: Black Mountain in Haverhill New Hamsphire is a 2836 foot elevation is the westernmost outpost of the White Mountains overlooks forrested valleys to the east towards imposing Mount Mousilauke. To the west it shows you the Connecticut River valley and green farmland extending to the Vermont hills. Don't be mislead by the lack of Black Mountains relatively low elevation. The upper section is very steep. The summit offers views to the east of Mount Mousilauke and to the west into Vermont. On the summit we plan on searching for the hidden spring that locals say "has water so cold that it makes your teeth ache". We'll climb the Chippewa trail 2 1/4 miles to the summit with 1800 feet of vertical. Bring water, lunch and dress appropriately for Fall hiking in White Mountains. Rain cancels. No dogs please. PS - There are more then one Black Mountain in NH. Don't confuse this Black Mountain with the one in North Conway that has a ski center. This is located along the Vermont border in Haverhill. |
