Summary

Bicycle 7 miles to the observation tower and back for a total of 15 miles – starting in the afternoon to twilight - seeing gators lounging beside the road, plenty of birds, and getting to the Observation Tower in time to see the sun just dip below the western horizon.  When the night falls, the full moon will rise at approximately 8:07 p.m.We will meet no later than 6:15 p.m. a little outside the gate to the park.  You have to park outsde the park on the shoulder off the side of the road (past the string of “no parking signs”). Do not park inside the gate, it is locked at 6:00.  Ride your bike into the park road just a short distance and we will meet at the first little pullout on the right, where the sign that posts entry fees is located (do not go to the entry booth, that is too far). We will leave promptly at 6:15 so if you are late just enter the park and head for the observation tower on the road on your right.  We will pedal at a leisurely pace; at this time of the afternoon the wild life is active and we will make stops to look at the gators, birds etc.

You need a bike, water, a snack, (maybe)bug spray and a flashlight (if you prefer, or if your bicycle has a light that's plenty).  You may be surprised at how busy the park will be after dark, you need a light so others won't mow you down. Please let me know if  you are coming and give my your email address and cell phone so I can reach you if the weather gods are acting up. I usually have a weak signal on Verizon at Shark Valley but you might not have any bars there.  Any questions feel free to contact me.

Anyone interested in carpooling with Rene, departing from Wilton Manors, is welcome to join him as he can carry three (3) additional bicycles.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

We will meet at the Shark Valley entrance to The Everglades on U.S. 41 (Tamiami Trail).  Take the Palmetto or the Turnpike to SW 8th Street, head west and when you reach the intersection of Krome Avenue (SW 177 Avenue), zero out your speedometer and travel 17.8 miles and the entrance to the park will be on your left.
