Black Mountain via Chippewa Trail

Trip Report/Photos from snowsurfer
Black Mountain is a short hike; but the steepness of the Chippewa Trail is quite challenging. The sunny day with 50ish temperatures made for great hiking weather on this sweat inducing trail.
About halfway up, the trail follows along ledges. They were great break points, with interesting rock, and nice views.
The summit has awesome views. It was quite windy on the trail up. But for some reason, the summit was pleasant with little wind. The mountain is known for "tipping rock". I found it by walking past the summit along the ledge. As much as I tried, I could not tip the rock - or even budge it a bit!
Coming down the mountain was by far the hardest part for me. I still have not learned how not to stress my knees and exhaust my legs walking down. But I made it back to the car with no injury. A beautiful clear stream near the end was perfect to cool and clean my feet. Yes, I was barefoot on this hike, like most of my hikes in the last couple of years. Feel the earth!
Black Mountain is in Benton, NH.
