Summary

Join Neil B. for a leisurely 30 mile (round trip) ride along the Northern Rail Trail from Lebanon to Canaan, NH and back. The trail is quite scenic, including a lovely section along Mascoma Lake. We'll stop for lunch in Canaan. Bring a lunch and/or snacks and water; there are few stores in Canaan. Also bring sunscreen, and layered clothing—even a hat and gloves. It may be cool at the beginning and end of the ride, but could be significantly warmer in the early to mid-afternoon.

With very few exceptions, the terrain is slightly uphill in the outbound direction, and downhill on the return. The hard-packed trail surface varies from cinder to crushed stone, and is a bit rough in spots. Road bikes are not advised, but hybrid or mountain bikes can easily handle this trail.

If there's interest, we'll go out for a late afternoon snack or early dinner after the ride. While masks are not required during the ride, be sure to have one with you. You'll need that to go inside any store or restaurant. Meeting time: 11 a.m.; we'll set out at 11:15.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

From the south: Take I-89 north to exit 17 for US-4 toward NH-4A/Enfield/Canaan. Follow Rt. 4 west/Bank St. for 2.3 miles. At Colburn Park, Bank St. will curve slightly right. Take an immediate right onto Campbell St. [**con't below]

From the north: Take I-89 south to exit 19 for US-4 toward NH-10/W. Lebanon/Hanover. Turn right onto US-4 east/Mechanic St., and continue for 1.4 mi. Turn slightly right onto Hanover St., which quickly becomes South Park St., and continue for 1/10 mile. (Colburn Park will be on your left.) Take your first left onto Campbell St. [**con't below]

**In a short distance Campbell St. turns right. After this curve, turn left on Spencer St. and look for the CCBA Witherell Recreation Center on your left. Park here; this is where we'll meet. I'll be driving a navy blue Toyota Prius with MA license plates.
