Summary

This is a great opportunity for beginners to enjoy an easy hike on the Back River trail located at the Eaton Farm Preserve in Wiscasset, ME. This is a stunning coastal walk with beautiful views of the shores on Montsweag Bay. The terrain is mostly flat with some small slopes. The trail will run through the woods and reach the Back River, then will continue along the river with some nice waterviews for the majority of the hike. The trail ends in an open field. The trail loop is a little over 2 miles with an opportunity to pick up a second loop which is also about 2 miles. After the hike, everyone is welcome to meet at my home afterwards for hot chocolate and cookies. If we get snow, bring snowshoes! If not, microspikes. Dress in non-cotton layers.

Maine Yankee  donated the 200-acre Eaton Farm to Chewonki in 2005 as part of a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission settlement agreement. Chewonki agreed to create a nature preserve, maintain public access, and foster stewardship of the estuarine environment. The Back River Trail at Eaton Farm got underway in 2005 – with 4.5 miles of trail opened to the public in 2006.
