Summary

This will be yet another exciting trip on the spectacular and untrammeled Downeast Coast of Maine. Many consider the scenic coastal hiking on this area to be Acadia National Park without the crowds. Our two full days, Sun. (July 22) and Mon. (July 23), will be centered on some of the most incredible hikes on this part of the coast. On Sun., we'll tackle the steep ascent of Tunk Mountain (1157 ft.) via a 4.5 mile loop trail.  From the top of Tunk, there are stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains, lakes, the Acadia skyline and the open ocean.  On a clear day we'll even be able to see all the way to Mt. Katahdin!  Returning from our hike, we'll stop at the beautiful Roque Bluffs Beach State Park for a walk along this rare, sandy Maine beach.  The fearless ones will have a chance to dive into the bone-chilling waters.  On Mon., we'll head up to the Bold Coast for several short hikes.  Our morning hike will be the 2.5 mile loop at Boot Head Preserve in Lubec. Here are some of the most scenic coastal vistas in Maine from the dramatic, high rocky shoreline overlooking the Grand Manan Channel.  After lunch in a pub in Lubec, we'll go on two short afternoon hikes. The first is a 0.6 mile walk to Klondike Mountain, where there are panoramic views of many bays and out to Lubec, Eastport, Campobello Island and the open ocean. Our second hike (2.3 miles) will be a loop trail through the Pike Lands Preserve where there are spectacular views of Cobscook Bay, a beautiful tidal cove and barrier beach and even an arboretum trail!

This will definitely be a fun and memorable trip. I can recommend reasonably-priced accommodations for your stay in Machiasport/Machias for the three nights (7/21, 7/22, 7/23). The first night, we'll all meet at my house in Machiasport (see directions) for a pizza dinner and schmoozing. If you have any questions, please be sure to give me a shout!

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

We will all meet at my house in Machiasport, which is located on Machias Bay. The goal is to meet there around 6:00 p.m. on Sat., July 21st. The house is located at 264 Port Rd. (Rt. 92), Machiasport, ME. Here are the directions: Take I-95 North through Maine to Bangor. In Bangor, take Exit 182A to merge onto I-395E toward US 1A/Bangor/ME-9/Brewer. Take Exit 6A for Rt. 1A East, toward Coastal Route/Rt. 1/Ellsworth/Bar Harbor. Take Rt. 1A approx. 25 miles to Ellsworth. In Ellsworth, take a left onto Rt. 1 North. Take Rt. 1 North for 58 miles to Machias. In Machias, take a right at the bottom of College Hill (before crossing the bridge over the Machias River) onto Rt. 92 (Elm St.). Take Rt. 92 for 2.9 miles to my house, on the left at #264 Port Rd. (Rt. 92) in Machiasport.
