Summary

Over the New Years Eve weekend I hiked with a friend of mine in Erving, MA.  Rather than make a short story long - one of the trails leading to the summit of Northfield Mountain we came upon groomed trails for cross country skiing.  After the hike I investigated and discovered Northfield Mountain Recreation & Environmental Center - a gift!!

http://www.h2opower.com/recreation/northfield-mountain-recreation-and-environmental-center/

Join me for a funfilled day of cross country skiing.  The center is located in Northfield, MA in Franklin County in western, MA.  It is a small town of fields, farms, forests where wetlands, streams, rivers and wildlife can be found in abundance.  The towns history dates to 1673 but was permanently settled in 1714.  More of the towns history can be found here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northfield,_Massachusetts

The center boasts 25 miles of carriage road style ski trails with categorized trails from easy to difficult, from flat to hilly.  We can ski for as long or as little as we like.  Bring a lunch and beverages, snacks are good too.  Dress for the weather - by the end of January I am hoping for more moderate temps.  Though we hiked on a One degree day - we were warm and comfortable.  Depending on group size and interest - we can scope out a place to grab a beer after the day.  Ski and rental rates can be found here:

If you are interested in the skiing but are traveling from afar - I have two bedrooms available in my home.  You can crash on Friday and/or Saturday evening.  Saturday evening we'll enjoy good conversation, a movie and snacks by the fire!!  The rate is $20 per evening and includes a light breakfast.  Each room has a double bed but if you bring a sleeping pad and sleeping bag - we can fit a few more.

Saturday is the center's busiest day so the meeting time is set for 9am, their opening time.

Driving directions to the location and spot to meet at:

The center's address is 99 Millers Falls Road, Northfield, MA  01360.  Mapquest and Google Maps will guide you correctly from your place of origin.  The center is roughly 2 hours from Boston, 1.5 hours from Hartford, CT and 1 hour from Springfield, MA.  I live one hour from the center and we can carpool from my home if you crash overnight.
