Summary
Hike up an abandoned trail through lovely birch glades to this 4,000 footer!
Mt. Hale's wooded summit [4,054 feet] doesn't offer views, but the Fire Warden's Trail wanders through lovely birch glades as a compensation. This is a popular destination for backcountry skiers and if we'd have a lot of snow, we'll might see them skinning up and skiing down through the birch glades! The gently graded route, which approaches Hale from the northwest, isn't officially maintained, and doesn't appear on recent maps. We'll reach it from Little River, via the North Twin Trail.
Stats: 9 miles, 2500' gain. Winter hiking experience and full winter gear is required including snowshoes.
Depending on the conditions in early February, appropriate gear should include: insulated winter boots [NOT your regular hiking boots!!], snowshoes, microspikes, wind/rain proof outer layers, wicking layers [no cotton], wool hat, gloves, handwarmers, water. lunch, etc.
If you have any questions, please reach out to me in advance.
Dinner afterward: You are welcome to join us for dinner at our house afterwards. We ask $10 to cover our food costs. Bring your own wine/beer and warm up next to our fireplace! You are welcome to use our showers [towels provided] so bring a change of clothing.
Lodging Option: Bunk beds are available at our house [with Wi Fi] near Waterville Valley, NH for Friday and/or Saturday nights. It's $25 for Friday night, $35 for Saturday that includes dinner or $60 for the weekend. Coffee/bagels each morning and linen/blankets/towels are provided. Space is limited so email ASAP to reserve a bunk!
Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot
Take I-93 North and take exit for Route 3 [Twin Mountain]. As you enter Twin Mountain, take a right onto Little River Road [same road as Seven Dwarfs Motel] and drive/park to the very end. We'll be driving a blue Toyota Tacoma truck.
