Be Prepared: Please be prepared to be self-sufficient. Have your own provisions such as first aid kit, food, water, extra clothing for unplanned weather, etc. Have your EMERGENCY CONTACT SHEET completed and in your backpack; it may save your life, and help reach someone who greatly cares!
Pace: There may be activities when the group is either slower or faster than your current ability. Our desire is not to leave anyone, however there have been times when it is in the best interest of all to split up. Please do your part by knowing your own abilities, communicating with the organizer head of time if you would like to start early and have us catch up or fine with finishing on your own.
Summary

It’s October – and fall colors are in full swing.  Join Jim and me for a strenuous and fun filled autumn hike up North Twin to South Twin with a short detour to tag Galehead Mtn.

The trek will take us to North Twin (4,761’) via the North Twin Trail then carrying along the North Twin Spur to summit South Twin (4,902’) followed by a modest trek along the Garfield Ridge Trail to tag Galehead (4,024’).  A short double back and then we go down the Gale River Trail.  This will require spotting a car at our end point.  In the event we don’t have a car to spot, Jim and I will make an in/out day going to South Twin and returning by the same route.

At the start of the North Twin Trail there is water crossing which can be very challenging if water levels are high.  There is also a tricky river crossing descending the Gale River Trail.  Recent weather has been very dry and we should be good.  Poles are good for balance when crossing rivers if you like them.  I recently did a hike where we forded a river barefoot.  Chilly it was, but doable.  I might suggest alternative footwear for crossing in the event we decide to take our boots off for the crossing.

This is a strenuous hike.  We will hike at a healthy pace but also take breaks as needed.  Please keep in mind that daylight ends around 6:30pm at this time of the year.  It is good preparation to carry your head lamp.

The Plan:

On Saturday morning we’ll meet at the Gale River Trail Head at 8am to leave a vehicle then carpool to the North Twin Trailhead parking for a 9:00am hike

This is a one day hike, a rocking 12 miles of stunning views and hiking adventure.

What to bring:

Food:  Bring a lunch for Saturday’s hike along with snacks and water.  As there are water crossings, bring a water filter if you wish to carry a lighter load of water.

Clothing:  No Cotton!  This is late autumn; expect temps to be varied and as low as the 20’s to 30’s.  We’ll know what the weather brings closer to the hike.  It is always good to bring layers, gloves, hat, and hand warmers – whatever your comfort level requires.

A forecast of steady rain cancels the hike.

Driving directions to the location and spot to meet at:

From Route 93 north take exit 35 for Route 3 north after emerging from the Franconia Parkway.  Follow route 3 to the intersection of Trudeau Road – known as “Five Corners”.  In the winter this road is gated but should be open for this hike.  Follow the dirt road and signs to the Gale River Trail Head – approximately 1.6 miles after leaving Route 3.  From here we will carpool to our starting point.
