Summary

Steep Rock Reservation is rich with history.  We will first hike to the "clam-shell" view of the Shepaaug River from the summit and to encounter remnants of the old Shepaug Railroad (1872-1948).  We'll walk through one of the railroad's tunnels and continue to hike along the banks of the river to cross a magnificent suspended bridge.  This is a moderate hike that is planned to take about 2.5 hours.  For moreinformation about the park visit www.steeprockassoc.org

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

Directions & meeting: Depending upon the direction you're coming from there are many ways to get to Washington Depot, CT. The following directions start in New Milford, CT and head north on Route 202.

Please note: As you get closer to the park there is increasing risk that GPS & phone signals will be lost.  We recommend that you use the address of “The Washington Pizza House”: 13 River Road, Washington Depot.  The actual address of the park is 2 Tunnel Road.

Option 1: Take 202 N from New Milford center. You will pass New Milford Hospital and the police station on your left.

Continue a few miles on Route 202 to the first traffic light. Take a right onto Route 109.

109 will twist & turn its way to the center of Washington Depot. At the first 4-way intersection take a right onto River Road.

Remain on River Road (Pass Washington Pizza House) as it follows the Shepaug River for 1.4 miles.

Turn left onto Tunnel Road, you will see dirt parking lots / entrance of Steep Rock Association almost immediately. Park in the first spot you can.
Option 2: Directions from route 47 North

Follow RT 47N  into the center of Washington Depot.  In the center of town, cross a bridge and River Road is immediately on your left

Take River Road for 1.4 miles (pass The Washington Pizza House) then turn left onto Tunnel Road – you will see dirt parking lots / entrance of Steep Rock Park almost immediately.

Park in the first spot you can find.

After Social: Will be held at the historical & exquisite GW Tavern.  GW is named after our first president in honor of his passage through this small town.  Once a charming circa 1850 Colonial home, it is now a Tavern offering a full menu and bar with optional dining on a flagstone patio overlooking the Shepaug River.  The tavern is located at 20 Bee Brook RD and is only 1.7 miles from the park. You simply go back out to route 47 north, then take a quick right onto RT 109 (Bee Brook RD); GW will be on the right.  For more information about the tavern please visit: http://www.gwtavern.com/history.php
