Summary

Start New Year’s Eve with a bang by joining us for a hike up Sandwich Dome!

Though the Sandwich Dome summit is not wide open, it does grant an excellent vista north over Waterville Valley to the high peaks of the Whites!  The open rocky nubble of Jennings Peak has great views south over the Smarts Brook valley and east to the Sandwich Range wilderness.

We take the Sandwich Mountain Trail to Noon Peak and then continue on to the summit of Sandwich Dome (3,980').  Both Noon Peak and Sandwich Dome offer great views.  We descend back down Sandwich Mountain trail to the junction of Drakes Brook Trail.  If time permits we can take a slight detour to Jennings Peak [3,460’] for more great views.  We take the Drakes Brook trail with its scenic frozen waterfalls back down to the trail head.

Distance:      8.7 miles

Elevation Gain: 2850 feet

What to wear/bring: Wear warm clothing suitable for the hike in layers...no cotton or blue jeans.  Wear a warm hat and gloves and bring hand warmers as a precaution. Bring along plenty of water (at least 2 liters), lunch, snacks and anything else you may require for a day hike. Make sure your pack is big enough to place your jacket and excess clothing into it as you warm up. For footwear, have winter insulated boots and MicroSpikes in case we encounter icy trails. We may need snowshoes if we had a snowstorm just prior to the hike…we’ll let you know a few days before. Contact us if you have any questions.

Afterwards:  Everyone is welcome to join us back at our house in Waterville Valley to relax by our fireplace [BYOB and bring snacks] followed by one of Jon's delicious dinners. We ask $10 per person to help pay for our food costs. Showers are available so bring a change of clothing to make your visit with us more comfortable.

Lodging Option: Bunk beds are available at our house [with Wi Fi] near Waterville Valley, NH. It's $35 for Saturday that includes dinner. Coffee/bagels each morning and linen/blankets/towels are provided. Space is limited so email ASAP to reserve a bunk!

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

Directions to the Trail head:

Take I-93 North to Exit 28, make a right onto NH49 East, travel about 11 miles, the Sandwich Mountain Trail parking lot is on the right. It's right before you enter Waterville Valley.

What a great way to ring in the New Year! Couldn't have asked for better scenery; spectacular vistas and snow laden trees, truly a winter wonderland! Parts were challenging, but pushing my limits was a positive way to start afresh. Great trip, good company, culinary delights, plus a heart warming toast to the year ahead! Thanks guys for a wonderful time! Wishing you a healthy and peaceful New Year!
