Join me for a weekend backpack exploring the higher elevations of the San Gabriel Mountains. This backpack is suitable for novices, but challenging day hikes will inspire seasoned trekkers. Our trip begins Saturday when we gather at the trailhead at Islip Saddle with our gear and hike 3 miles to the Little Jimmy Campsites. The campsites are set among pines at about 7000'. There are pit toliets and a year-round spring.
On Saturday we'll a campsite, have lunch, replinish our water and then take a day hike to the summit of 8,250' Mt. Islip and soak up the view. You're expected to provide your own meals including dinner Saturday. Pack a deck of cards or small game for after dinner fun. Aside from the fuel for you campstove (propane/butane), fires aren't permitted.
On Sunday morning after breakfast , we'll hit the trail with just a day-pack and hike from our campsite to the summit of Mt. Baden Powell. This is a 10-mile, roundtrip hike with a gradual elevation gain. Mt. Baden Powell is the second highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains topping 9,000' above sea level. Then we'll return to our campsite, and after a rest, pack up and return to our cars.
You are responsible for your own gear. Pack a tent, appropriate clothing...shorts for day hikes, but long pants and a jacket for nippy nights at 7,000'. Though you'll probably hike in boots, sandals are fine for walking around the campsite. You are responsible for your own food and the secure storage of your food, such as a bear cannister or ropes. I'll bring a water filter, but you may also pack one. The daytime sun at this elevation can be intense, so pack sunscreen and insect repellent.
I'm a member of Great Outdors - Los Angeles and this trip is also posted on their webpage. The nominal fee for this trip is $15 per camper ($25 per couple...two people in 1 tent & 1 car). You may contact me to pre-register or pay during the trip. If you choose to pay by check, please make it out to : Great Outdoors.
Thank you... I look forward to seeing you at Little Jimmy.
To find the trailhead from the LA Basin, take the Angeles Crest Hwy (the 2) from La Canada (toward Wrightwood). There is a parking area with a restroom on the north side of the highway (about 40 miles form La Canada. You'll find it shortly after passing through a tunnel, and just beyond where the now closed Hwy 39 once intersected the Angeles Crest Hwy). To park here, you must display an Adventure Pass in you car. If you don't already have an annual pass, you may purchase a pass at the ranger station you'll pass on the Angeles Crest along the way.
If some of us are departing from the same vicinity and plan to do the day hike Sunday, we may organize a carpool.
